Escape Attempt Thwarted at Salem Prison
 
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 20, 2000
 
A perimeter alarm system and the quick actions of a correctional officer thwarted an escape attempt this morning at Oregon State Correctional Institution.
 
At approximately 6:50 a.m the prison´s perimeter alarm system activated and a correctional officer noticed the shadows of two people near the double perimeter fences that face Highway 22. The officer immediately notified the prison´s armed mobile patrol officer for assistance. The two inmates were found near the inside perimeter fence attempting to hide. Additional staff responded to the area to assist in apprehension of the inmates, one of whom was resistive
 
At no time did the two inmates breach the fences and reach the outside of the institution.
The institution was immediately placed on lock-down status, an emergency inmate count was ordered and all inmates were present.
 
At this time officers from the prison, the State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating the incident.
 
The two inmates involved were Jerome Sloan, 26, from Multnomah County and Sterling Cunio, 23, from Benton County.
 
Inmate Sloan was received by the Oregon Department of Corrections on September 23, 1994. He is currently serving a life sentence without parole for aggravated murder. Inmate Cunio was received by the department on August 30, 1994. He is currently serving a life sentence for two aggravated murder convictions.
