Two Inmates Escape from Minimum Security Prison

Two inmates escaped late this morning from Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland. Law enforcement authorities are searching for Kristina Collette Shelton, 31, and Jerald Raymond Helsel (aka Helseli), 37, both minimum custody inmates, who apparently cut through the prison´s perimeter fence at the back of the institution.

Helsel was assigned to work in the prison´s maintenance shop inside the institution. Shelton was assigned to the work coordinator´s office also inside the institution. Helsel was noted missing at approximately 10:50 a.m. Following emergency protocol, the prison was immediately locked down, searched and an emergency count was conducted. At that point Shelton was also noted missing.

Both garments had prominent orange "inmate" stencils. She was serving time for two counts of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Manslaughter. She was concurrently under post-prison supervision for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Perform. She had expired sentences for a 1990 Escape from minimum custody, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

Jerald Raymond Helsel, also known as Jerald Raymond Helseli, was born January 2, 1963. He is a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6´0" tall and weighs 170 lbs. He was wearing Prison Blues jeans and a long-sleeved light blue shirt. Both garments had prominent orange "inmate" stencils. He was admitted to prison on September 23, 1986.
