At the invitation of Senator John Lim (R - Gresham), a minimum custody inmate will spend a day in the Capitol next week observing the democratic process.

On Tuesday, May 4, Inmate Bret Bayne, 38, a convicted drug offender from Coos County, will accompany Senator Lim through some of his daily schedule and help out in the senator's office. Senator Lim plans to introduce the inmate on the Senate floor and ask him to observe subcommittee hearings.

"As legislators, we have many opportunities to observe and impact inmates' living and work environments," said Senator Lim. "I thought it a good idea to turn the tables and give an inmate an opportunity to see the considered and thoughtful processes that drive those decisions that affect their daily lives."

Inmate Bayne was convicted of Delivery and Manufacture of a Controlled Substance in February 1999. He is slated to be released in April, 2000 and must serve 36-months on post-prison supervision. He was selected by the Department of Corrections because of his low security risk and his demonstrated ability to act appropriately in a public environment.
