TUNNEL DISCOVERED AT PENITENTIARY
Oregon State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating an unfinished tunnel discovered at Oregon State Penitentiary on Thursday, June 12.
The tunnel was not long enough to pose an immediate threat of escape, however the institution conducted a count of inmates to ensure that public safety had not been compromised.
The 24´ tunnel originates in the prison kitchen area and heads toward the wall. Inmates managed to dig through a thick concrete slab floor and down over 6 feet before directing the tunnel south. The tunnel would have needed to be at least an approximate 120 feet longer and was not deep enough to have gone under the wall. Areas outside of the wall are under constant surveillance by tower officers and perimeter patrols.
