Age:
You must be 21 years of age to apply.
Vision:
Corrected vision shall be at least 20/30 (Snellen) in each eye. Due to the demonstrated likelihood of dislodgment or breakage, candidates who are able to wear only glasses with frames shall meet an uncorrected standard not worse than 20/100 (Snellen) in each eye. Those candidates who use soft contact lenses (SCLs) shall have vision correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye, with no uncorrected standard.
Hearing:
Hearing amplification devices used to meet the hearing standard must be the type that protects the applicant from further hearing degradation due to amplification of loud sounds.
Health:
Overall good physical health; have a good, sound, mental and emotional condition, and lack of restrictions that would interfere with the full performance of the duties of a correctional officer.
Education:
Have a high school diploma/GED certificate, or other proof of education at the same or higher level. Acceptable proof of all training and education listed on the application or background questionnaire must accompany your application.
Citizenship:
Candidates must be a United States citizen or be able to become a citizen within twelve months of appointment in order to attend the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training academy. If you are not a naturally born United States citizen, and are a naturalized citizen, a naturalization certificate must accompany your application.
Conduct:
You must have a history of law-abiding conduct with no felony convictions. Each applicant must be of good moral fitness, should have no acts or conduct which would cause a reasonable person to have substantial doubts about the individual´s honesty, fairness, respect for the rights of others, or for the laws of the state and/or the nation. You must be legally eligible to own, possess and have custody/control of any firearm or other weapon authorized by the Department of Corrections.
Drivers License:
You must possess a valid driver´s license. You may be required to possess/or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver´s License to operate vehicles more than 26,000 pounds, designed to carry 16 or more passengers.
Driving Record:
You must have an acceptable driving record; driving records will be analyzed on an individual basis for applicants who have had their license suspended and/or had a DUII.
