Title: Prescribing Errors in Ambulatory Pediatrics

Summary: The aims of this Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award are to: (1) validate a method for imputing weights for determining overdose and underdose for pediatric medications; (2) define and determine the frequency of ambulatory pediatric prescribing errors; (3) identify provider and patient characteristics associated with pediatric prescribing errors. The project further aims to: (4) evaluate whether electronic medical records that include a prescribing module reduce the rate of pediatric prescribing errors among trainees; and (5) determine the relative contributions of prescriber and pharmacy to pediatric ambulatory prescribing errors. No data will be collected specifically for this study. This study will use prescription data from SC Medicaid enrollees on ages 0-18 years old, including Hispanic and African-American children and youth of both genders.

Summary: The aims of this Institutional Training-Post Doctoral Award are to (1) prepare clinicians in pharmacy, nursing and medicine such as pediatrics to conduct health services research in a practical setting focusing on changing healthcare systems and understanding differences in organizational cultures, and (2) stimulate improvement in the healthcare system's responsiveness to diverse groups of patients, including minority, poor and other underserved patients.

Summary: In this study, data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey will be used to conduct a cross-sectional analysis to examine the content of well child care, compare proportions of visits provided to minority to non-minority patients, and determine if there are racial disparities.
