Summary: The purpose of this study is to determine (1) dental services utilization for children in the Iowa SCHIP and Medicaid programs; (2) factors related to unmet dental need for children; (3) factors related to "self-reported" unmet dental need for children; and (4) costs associated with providing dental care for children in both programs and whether there is pent-up demand for dental care.

Summary: This study will track and execute identity checks when blood samples are collected, transported, and analyzed, and when blood products are released from the blood bank and administered to patients. Identity checks will be conducted with handheld wireless barcode devices at the point of care. Barcodes attached to blood products and patients will be scanned and the resulting information will be fed automatically into a new online "check" application that will provide immediate notification of any mismatches. The project will compare the proportion of mislabeled blood specimens, mislabeled blood products, and misidentified patients before and after the implementation. This study will create the information systems technology necessary for numerous other patient safety efforts. Children will be included in the study in the same numbers and proportions they represent in the patient population. Minorities and women will also participate in this research.

Title: Asthma Education Conference for Tribal Health Officers Serving the Aberdeen Area—September, 2006 (Rapid City, SD)

Summary: The goal of this regional conference was to advance the state of knowledge of asthma among tribal health representatives and directors, Indian Health Service staff, emergency medical workers, nurses, and pediatricians working with 18 tribes in the region served by the Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center, in an effort to transform this knowledge into better medical services and heightened understanding of this condition in their communities. The conference focused on childhood asthma among Native Americans in the Northern Plains region and served to inform representatives of the Northern Plains tribal health agencies about the current state of asthma research and treatment, potential environmental health triggers, prevention strategies, and environmental improvement measures. Additionally, the conference addressed exposure to common indoor and outdoor contaminants including, but not limited to, environmental tobacco smoke, allergens and endotoxins; molds and insects; biological and chemical contaminants; emmisions from wood-burning stoves; and motor vehicle exhaust.
