Child Health Extramural Research by State and Country

Colorado

Principal Investigator: Daugherty, Kay
Title: Improving Patient Safety through Provider Communication Strategy Enhancements*
Institution: Denver Health and Hospital Authority, Denver, CO
E-mail: kay.daugherty@dhha.org
Project Dates: 07/01/05-06/30/07
Project No.: U18 HS15846
Summary: This project will develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive provider team communication strategy safe practice intervention, resulting in an implementation toolkit that can be generalized to other settings of care. Researchers will first implement an evidence-based standardized communication tool—the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR)—a scripting guide for provider communication regarding changes in patient status or needs for non-emergent events. Next, an escalation-process algorithm will be developed and implemented for provider communication regarding changes in patient conditions for non-code situations. The third phase of the project involves implementing daily, patient-centered multi-disciplinary rounds using an evidence-based daily goals sheet that will include all providers involved in the patient's care. Finally, researchers will implement provider and support staff team huddles at the beginning of each shift to quickly brief staff on operational expectations of the shift. Women and minorities will be included in this research. Children will be included to the extent they are 18-21 years of age and that they have triggered the use of the SBAR or the escalation algorithm.

Title: Colorado Connecting Communities-Health Information Collaborative (C3-HIC)*
Institution: University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Aurora, CO
E-mail: arthur.davidson@ucmsc.edu
Project Dates: 09/30/04-09/29/09
Contract No.: 290-04-0014
Summary: The purpose of this project is to implement Statewide information and communications technologies to enable clinicians to access patient information from other clinical data repositories at the point of care.

Principal Investigator: Hambidge, Simon J.
Title: Epidemiology and External Causes of Pediatric Injury—Related Visits to Emergency Departments and Hospital Outpatient Departments in the United States.
Institution: Denver Health Medical Center, Denver, CO
E-mail: shambidg@dhha.org
Project Dates: 04/01/01-06/30/02
Project No.: HRSA-240-97-0043
Summary: The purpose of this project is to define and examine the epidemiology and external causes of pediatric injuries seen in emergency departments and hospital outpatient departments, and compare the demographic characteristics of children with injury-related visits to those with non-injury related visits.

Principal Investigator: Pace, Wilson D.
Title: Applied Strategies for Interventions of Patient Safety
Institution: University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, CO
E-mail: wilson.pace@uchsc.edu
Project Dates: 09/30/01-09/27/04
Project No.: U18 HS11878
Summary: The setting of this study involves two practice-based research networks: the Colorado Research Network (includes a pediatric practice) and the High Plains Research Network. Both provide services to the rural, urban, minority, frontier and underserved populations. Researchers will collect and analyze the causes and effects of errors in primary care, as well as develop and implement interventions aimed at decreasing recognized errors in primary care.

Principal Investigator: Simon, Tamara
Title: Ambulatory Injury: The Role of Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status
Institution: University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Aurora, CO
E-mail: pgovind23@yahoo.com
Project Dates: 07/13/05-12/31/05
Project No.: HHSP233200500492P
Summary: This project will determine overall patterns of injury-related medical visits to emergency departments and primary care practices. Specifically, this study will compare children of Latino ethnicity to non-Latino children with rates of injuries related to death, hospitalizations, and barriers to care. Using the National Health Interview Survey, data will be analyzed to determine the number of injury episodes linking to sample child files with independent variables relating to injuries in children.

*Project includes children or children's health care issues but does not focus exclusively on children.
