I'm the Director of Special Projects for ProLiteracy America, in Syracuse, NY. Have any of you done or attended workshops or seminars on how to help women literacy learners develop self-advocacy skills and knowledge? Can you direct me to people who have done some thinking in this area, writing, and/or presenting? Do you know of any literacy providers who have an advocacy in their work with women learners? What do you think are the issues that we should be addressing? I'm not being real specific about advocating for what, because I can imagine the advocacy focus being the workplace, government agencies, families, health, and/or consumer settings. While I'm asking about self-advocacy, I can also imagine that the knowledge and skills women gain would/could be put to use on behalf of their families or communities as part of community organizing or more communal advocacy activities. Thanks for any help you can provide. You can respond to me directly at jhugo@proliteracy.org or to the list. Thanks. Jane M.
