Andy,

I hope that John Guffey and the other folks from the Adult Learning Center on
the University of NM at Gallup will respond to this query, but in case they
don't see it, I am going to give a briefing on their service learning
project, which they called Sweet Medicine. It is tied to all three role
maps, but particularly, the Citizen/Community Member Role. John and others
were just becoming acquainted with EFF when they initiated this project in
1999.

The project began with a connection to the BAR: Become and Stay Informed as
well as to the BAR: Take Action to Strengthen Communities. ABE students in
this project are American Indians, mostly Navajo. Their participation
consisted of a range of activities. Beginning with their own needs to
understand, students engaged in learning about diabetes (Focus on Research
Standard), educating themselves and their own families about the dangers,
diagnosis and treatment of the disease. They provided direct service to
clients of the Public Health Services Diabetes Prevention Project by
assisting in a diabetes clinic, preparing a series of educational puppet
shows, and administering a fitness program for elementary students. They
also participated in a national diabetes conference held in Gallup, New
Mexico, where they presented their own workshop on service learning and
diabetes prevention. Diabetes is an epidemic in this region, and these
students provided their community with much needed assistance. It is clear
that several standards were addressed.

I feel certain that John has many ideas for how he might approach this
project today. He and the other talented folks in NM can be reached at the
Adult Learning Center, UNM-Gallup Campus, 200 College Drive, Gallup, NM 87301.
