(Have a box of kleenex handy!) The use of this as a method to introduce the goal setting process and go beyond the superficial to determine the students purpose for learning can be a dramatic introduction to the classroom. Many times I have witnessed the students instantly bond thru this excercise and create friendships and a learning community that lasts well throughout the academic quarter and beyond. I am glad you mentioned this, as other instructors may want to try this process out.
