I also use the 5 Why's and have found it to be such an exciting teaching 
method.  (Have a box of kleenex handy!)  The use of this as a method to 
introduce the goal setting process and go beyond the superficial to determine 
the students purpose for learning can be a dramatic introduction to the 
classroom.  Many times I have witnessed the students instantly bond thru this 
excercise and create friendships and a learning community that lasts well 
throughout the academic quarter and beyond.  

I am glad you mentioned this, as other instructors may want to try this 
process out.
