Resurgence of BSE in the European Union

The European Union is experiencing a resurgence of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) with the result that beef demand and cattle prices are plunging and drastic control measures are likely to be put in place. This current BSE crisis is likely to have a far wider and deeper impact on agricultural products than the 1996 crises when the UK was the locus of BSE concerns. This report presents several factors that highlight the potential impact this crisis may have on U.S. and global meat trade.
