AMERICAN APPAREL AND FOOTWEAR ASSOCIATION
FORMS ALLIANCE WITH OSHA
Efforts will focus on reducing ergonomic injuries in the industry

WASHINGTON -- A new Alliance was signed today between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the American Apparel and Footwear Association to help reduce workplace injuries and illnesses in the industry, with a particular focus on ergonomics.

"We're pleased that AAFA wants to work with us to make information on ergonomics best practices more widely available and more broadly implemented in their industry," said OSHA Administrator John L. Henshaw. "AAFA joins 22 other organizations participating in seven ergonomic-specific Alliances with us to address ergonomics as part of a focused effort to strengthen safety and health in their workplaces."

Added AAFA President Kevin M. Burke: "AAFA looks forward to working with OSHA to help our member companies as they strive to maintain a safe workplace. While the expertise that OSHA can provide AAFA's members is invaluable, we also feel that our members will be just as helpful in providing OSHA with insights born of real-world experiences."

Safe and healthful working conditions for the apparel and footwear industry is the goal of the Alliance and one means to achieve that end is to provide the association's members with training on ergonomics techniques, program structure and specific applications as they apply to the industry. OSHA and AAFA will reach out to members who may benefit from mentoring or guidance in developing, implementing or improving already-existing ergonomic programs.

Together, OSHA and AAFA plan to develop and disseminate information through various print and electronic media, particularly using both organizations' web sites. That information will also be disseminated in applicable foreign languages. Outreach and communication goals will also be met through speeches, exhibits or appearances at conferences or other events, as well as sharing AAFA best practices information with others in the industry. Cross-training OSHA personnel and industry safety and health practitioners in AAFA ergonomics programs rounds out the goals of the Alliance.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association was formed in August 2000 through the merger of three trade associations: the American Apparel and Manufacturers Association, Footwear Industries of America, and The Fashion Association.

OSHA is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
