Meet the Staff

Andy Smith, West Hawai`i Liaison

Andy Smith has been a Big Island resident for over the past decade.  He has been serving as the Governor’s Liaison on the Big Island since 2002, where he was previously the East Hawai`i Liaison and now represents West Hawai`i.  He is tasked with bringing the local needs and concerns of the community to the Governor and also sets up the Governor’s West Hawai`i Council of Advisors meetings, which helps bring government closer to the people. 

A proud graduate of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, Andy was also a standout Vulcan basketball player in the mid 90’s.   After a successful career on and off the court, Andy Smith is now the President and Director of Hawai`i Island Hoops.  Here he provides programs, camps and clinics for the local community to get actively involved in.  His organization also helps high school student athletes achieve their goals by helping them get college scholarships and helps place them on their way to a higher education through sports.  With the early success of several local student-athletes, Andy continues giving back to the community he loves.  Andy resides in Kailua-Kona with his wife Zara.
