"I think access to the courts is a very important American freedom. I
think we've got to be very, very careful in what we do in tort reform not to
deny people access to the courts. If you're a big company or a city department
or -- I was in the military. You always have lawyers. They work for you. You
don't think anything about it. When you become a private citizen, when you're
just an ordinary person out there, you don't have your own lawyer. You don't
keep him on retainer at $500 a month. And if something goes wrong, you need
access to the courts, and those trial lawyers are there to help ordinary
people."
