It is not necessary for the '.java' file to be in the 'plugin' directory, it can be in a subdirectory but the external class'es are only found if in the 'plugin' folder. If the externally defined classes are defined within the same '.java' file as the invoking class, it will compile OK generating separate class files in the same subdirectory. Cutting the external class'es from the source file works but only if the external class files are moved to the upper 'plugin' folder. IJ does cleanup during compile, deleting duplicate class files, if one copies (rather than moves) the external classes to the upper 'plugin' folder.
