Wayne, I think the problem that is posed is to estimate the molecular weight of a protein sample based on the position of the band in a gel relative to molecular weight markers. This would probably require some non-linear curve fitting of the distance along the gel vs. the MW of the markers. Then the distance to the unkown band can be plugged in to get the estimated MW.
