Public Schedule for the Week of April 12-19, 2008

April 12, Governor Lingle will participate in the 66th anniversary commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan – Day of Valor, an event that pays tribute to the valor, gallantry and service of Filipino, American and other Allied defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. The Governor will lay a wreath at the memorial marker to honor World War II Filipino-American veterans.

April 12, The Governor will participate in the 60th anniversary celebration for Market City Shopping Center, which serves the Kaimuki, Kapahulu and Mo‘ili‘ili communities.

April 16 – 17, Governor Lingle will attend the Republican Governors Association (RGA) forum “Powering America: Energy in the 21st Century.”  The roundtable discussion will build on the progress of the National Governors Association (NGA) annual winter meeting in February, which focused on securing a clean energy future.  The RGA and NGA discussions complement the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s ongoing Energy for Tomorrow initiative, and also tie in with the unprecedented partnership formed in January between the State of Hawai‘i and U.S. Department of Energy to increase the state’s energy independence by using clean, renewable resources to supply at least 70 percent of Hawai‘i’s energy needs by 2030.

April 18 – 19, Governor Lingle will cheer on six Hawai‘i high school robotics teams that will represent the state in the 2008 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.  Three teams – Radford High School, Honoka‘a High School and Waialua High School – advanced to the championship after competing in the 2008 NASA / BAE Systems FIRST in Hawai‘i Regional Robotics Competition at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Stan Sheriff Center in March.  Three other teams – Waiākea High School, McKinley High School and Sacred Hearts Academy – qualified at previous regional competitions on the mainland.  Robotics is a critical component of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's Hawai‘i Innovation Initiative because it engages students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The robotics program also provides students with opportunities to develop teamwork, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills that will better prepare them to enter the work force and succeed in their endeavors.
