Questions and Answers (06/13/2006)

Q1:
Are there any issues with adding a summer student to the NCCS systems?

Answer:
As long as the summer student has a sponsor, meets all NASA requirements for system access, and there is the understanding that some sort of disposition must be made concerning any data created by the end of the summer, then summer student access is allowed.

Q2:
Will IDL be available on the new cluster?

Answer:
IDL will be available on the cluster, but not immediately. Once the cluster has gone through an initial integration phase, and specialized analysis nodes are added, then the NCCS plans to add IDL.

Q3:
Will there be IDL added to palm?

Answer:
There is currently an issue on the Altix systems when running IDL across multiple CPUS, however we will look into the feasibility of getting IDL on this system.

Q4:
Is feedback from the users being sent to Intel with regard to problems with compilers?

Answer:
The NCCS actively opens tickets with Intel on any known issues. While there seems to be little control over when those tickets or issues are addressed by Intel, the NCCS continues to provide user feedback where appropriate.

Q5:
Is there a possibility of getting other compilers on palm?

Answer:
The NCCS will look at the feasibility of getting additional compilers on palm, however as a reminder there are other compilers available currently besides the Intel compilers.

Q6:
Can users get additional unsupported software, such as compilers, added to the NCCS systems?

Answer:
If users require additional software, please send an email to the User Services Group at support@nccs.nasa.gov.

Q7:
What is the best way to provide feedback to the NCCS with regard to the user's experience?

Answer:
The NCCS always welcomes comments and feedback from the user community. The best way to receive this feedback is for a user to send a message to the User Services Group at support@nccs.nasa.gov.
