Getting dirty to protect Mother Nature

Metro buses are giving up their twice-weekly baths to conserve water in anticipation of a regional and statewide drought this summer.

Photo: bus washNormally, each of Metro’s 1,400 buses is washed twice a week, and that level of cleanliness is something customers comment on frequently.

“Overall, our buses look great and everyone appreciates it, but this year I think people in King County will be more appreciative of our efforts to conserve water and will be accepting of buses that are not as clean as usual,” said Jim Boon, Metro’s vehicle maintenance manager.

Even with water-flow restrictors in the bus wash systems, it still takes about 40 gallons of water to wash one bus. Boon estimates that by washing the buses only once a month, Metro will be able to conserve 400,000 gallons of water monthly.

Two major bus reroutes this weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation will be conducting a regular inspection of the Alaskan Way Viaduct this weekend. The shutdown of the viaduct through Seattle will cause reroutes for several Metro bus routes.

The viaduct will be closed from Spokane Street to the Battery Street tunnel on Saturday, March 26 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and on Sunday, March 27 from 6 p.m. to 3 p.m. This will affect Metro routes 37, 54, 55, 120 and 125.

Also, on Saturday, March 26, the Woodinville All Fools Day Parade will disrupt transit service for Metro routes 236 and 251 and Sound Transit Route 522 between 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. For all the details on the reroutes, visit Metro Online’s “Updates” section.

Early warning – Meadowbrook Bridge to close in April for major renovation

The King County Road Services Division will be closing the Meadowbrook Bridge near Snoqualmie for seven months beginning in April to renovate the historic bridge.

Photo: Meadowbrook BridgeThe 84-year-old bridge is located on Meadowbrook Way Southeast at Southeast Reinig Road and spans the Snoqualmie River. During the closure, crews will replace the timber approach trestles with new concrete spans, rebuild the truss deck, and convert the bridge from two lanes to a single lane with traffic signals at each end.

The bridge is scheduled to remain closed through October. For more information and suggested detours, visit the project website.
