Metro is going places this holiday weekend

Going to see the fireworks in Seattle or Woodinville this holiday weekend? Metro Transit can help ease your trip.

All of Metro service will operate with regular weekend schedules on Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3. Then for the holiday on Monday, July 4, most routes will be operating on a Sunday schedule. Sunday Family Fares also apply on Monday, and Day Passes good on Metro service are available for $2 from Metro drivers on that day.

For those coming to Seattle to view the big fireworks show [external link] on the waterfront, the Elliott Bay Water Taxi will operate on a Saturday schedule and the West Seattle land shuttle, Route 773, is on a weekend schedule. The George Benson Waterfront Streetcar will have a Sunday schedule with extra trips to handle the waterfront crowds. The streetcar will be free all day on the Fourth.

The Woodinville fireworks show [external link] will be served by Metro's special shuttles between Woodinville and the Brickyard Park-and-Ride, and by private shuttles from Redmond. Both services are free.

Metro also has special service for this three-day weekend for the Mariners games against Texas, and the horse racing at Emerald Downs.

There is bus service to most other weekend events. Certain trips may be rerouted near some of the community celebrations, and there may be traffic delays. Visit Metro Online for complete information about special shuttles or service exceptions for Fourth of July weekend events.

School year comes to a close at KCIA

Opportunity Skyway completed another successful year at the King County International Airport, as 49 students received their high school diplomas or GED certificates last week.

Opportunity Skyway is a regional education initiative that uses aviation to excite students about math, science, and aviation career opportunities. It is designed to reach teenagers who have struggled with traditional school programs in the past. It is among the most successful dropout retrieval programs in region.

Although graduation is still three years away for them, the inaugural class at Aviation High School completed their studies, too. The 100 ninth graders were frequent guests at KCIA this year, taking classes at Museum of Flight and visiting the businesses housed at Boeing Field.

Summer will be busy at Boeing Field. The Opportunity Skyway summer program - in partnership with King County Work Training - will begin July 5. This year more than 20 students from the Highline School District are enrolled.

The annual Eagles Aviation Camp sponsored by the Black Pilots Association, Alaska Airlines and local businesses will be back at Boeing Field July 19-21. And, every Tuesday morning, campers from Museum of Flight's summer program will be touring KCIA.
