Multi-lingual Bellevue neighbors make transit connections

Photo: Crossroads RTC'sLanguage barriers often prevent non-English speaking residents from understanding and using the transportation options available in their community. So, King County Metro Transit and the City of Bellevue are testing a new concept in the Crossroads area that provides neighbor-to-neighbor transportation advice.

Residential Transportation Coordinators (RTCs) are multi-lingual individuals trained and paid by Metro to help their neighbors find transportation solutions that work for them. The Bellevue RTCs all live or work in the Crossroads neighborhood, and speak several languages including: Spanish; Vietnamese; Korean; Mandarin/Taiwanese; Russian; Khmer; Thai; French; and English.

Most of their work is done by phone, but the RTCs also visit with people at community meetings and social events. Crossroads residents can contact the RTCs in their neighborhood by calling (425) 943-6786.

Free shuttles for Duwamish River Festival

Photo: festival logoMetro is teaming up with several environmental agencies to offer free shuttles to the Duwamish River Festival this Saturday at the Duwamish Waterway Park in South Seattle.

The event is co-sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency, Washington Department of Health, Port of Seattle, King County, City of Seattle, Washington Department of Ecology, Boeing, the Green/Duwamish Central Puget Sound Watershed Coalition, and the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition.

The festival is designed to help the community learn more about the clean up of contaminants and health risks associated with the Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Site. Activities include entertainment, face painting, an appearance by Bert the Salmon, health information booths, child-friendly natural yard care tips, and other kids’ activities.

The free shuttles run in a 30-minute loop between the park, the South Park neighborhood, East Marginal Way South, the Georgetown neighborhood, and also connect with regular bus service on Metro routes 60, 131, and 174. See Metro Online for all the details.

Kudos for Roads crew

Photo: Culvert work on SE 288th St.The King County Road Services Division always appreciates a kind word, particularly when it comes from members of the public who recognize the benefits of the projects the division constructs.

Recently, Roads’ maintenance unit replaced an under-the-road culvert east of Kent, and received praise from a local homeowner:

“I wish to compliment Terry DePriest and the crew which he managed for the fine performance in installing a new salmon-friendly culvert on Southeast 288th Street.

“Terry briefed me on the project in a complete and professional manner before the project started. I really appreciated knowing in advance the nature of the project. We discussed how it would impact my property.

“The work was done in a professional manner. The behavior of the crew was polite and appropriate. My property was left in excellent condition, actually much improved and aesthetically pleasing.
“I appreciated Terry's attention to the details of the project and the crew's sensitivity to we folks in the neighborhood.”
