ROAD ALERT SPOTLIGHT

Mudslides, river flooding causing hazardous
morning travel conditions in King County

The King County Road Services Division is alerting morning commuters of a variety of travel problems due to ongoing rain and saturated soil conditions.

The division says a mudslide has occurred along a section of Pohl Road on Vashon Island about one-quarter mile from the Vashon Highway.  Utility workers are on the scene to remove power lines but the Roads Division says the road is passable for local traffic.

Another small slide on Burma Road on the island is currently being cleaned up and is not expected to result in a long-term closure.

Minor river flooding on the Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers is also causing problems for commuters.  Currently, Southeast 24th Street between 309th Avenue Southeast and 316th Avenue Southeast and West Snoqualmie River Road (AKA Walker Road) between Tolt Hill Road and Southeast 24th Street are closed due to the river flooding.

In addition to these problems, the Roads Division says it has received several reports of local road flooding and downed trees which could cause travel problems for motorists until the weather improves.  Motorists are urged to use extra caution when traveling today and are reminded to never drive around barricades or through standing water.

If you spot a problem on a road maintained by King County, report it by calling (206) 296-6515 or 1-800 KC ROADS if you live outside the greater Seattle calling area.
