West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted to people, birds and other animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. This virus can cause serious illness in people of any age, but especially in people over the age of 50 or those with other underlying medical conditions. You can protect yourself by avoiding mosquito bites. Taking the following precautions can help you "Fight the Bite". 1.  Wear repellent containing DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (all EPA-approved repellents) according to the label. 2. Remove standing water around your home - this is where mosquitoes like to breed, and 3.  Cover up your skin with clothing between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

 

Locally-acquired mosquito-borne human infections were first recorded in Idaho in 2004. In 2006, Idaho led the nation in reports of human illness associated with WNV with 996 cases being reported to the state health department.  In addition to people, WNV was also detected in 338 horses, 127 birds and numerous mosquitoes.
