Jail Inspections
Statutorily Required

There are approximately 118 adult jails, holding facilities and juvenile detention centers within the state of Oregon.  The law requires that the Department of Corrections inspect these facilities for compliance with Oregon law, and to report the findings to the authorities responsible for the facility’s operation and control.

Primary statutory authority can be found in the following statutes: ORS 169.070 - 169.750, 179.040, 419A.052, 419B.180, 423.020, 423.030, and 423.075. These statutes also require that the state review new construction (and renovation) plans for all correctional facilities within the state.

Statutes also outline the appropriate action to ensure compliance with established standards in ORS 169.076 to 169.078, 419A.052, and 419B.180
