Issue Name Pain Medicine Specialty Code 072 and the PECOS Database
Issue When the Medicare enrollment form was updated in February of 2008 the specialty code 072 was no longer included in the list of Medicare recognized specialties. This effectively limited pain physicians to selecting specialty code 009 (Interventional Pain Medicine). Pain physicians have contacted us to ask that CMS correct this oversight and revise the Medicare enrollment form as soon as possible.

June 6: The correction of the 855I will take some time and we do not have a delivery date for the revision yet. Until the 855I has been revised physicians who want to enroll in Medicare using speciality code 072 should check "undefined physician type" on the 855I and then enter "Pain Management 072" in the specialty section of the 855. 

We will post the delivery date of the revised 855 as soon as that information is available.

September 2: We hope to have an updated 855 with specialty code 072 listed before years end.
