This is a national, community-based program that aims to reduce the growing trend of obesity and the risk of coronary heart disease in the United States by encouraging Americans of all ages to aim for a healthy weight, follow a heart-healthy eating plan, and engage in regular physical activity.


KaBOOM!
A national nonprofit that develops partnerships with communities and businesses to design and build or restore safe community playgrounds. A community-building model is used to save money and engage communities in providing young children with healthy play opportunities.

Physical Activity Reference Materials

Bright Futures in Practice: Physical Activity
Provides developmental guidelines on physical activity for the periods of infancy through adolescence. Includes current information on screening, assessment, and counseling to promote physical activity and to meet the needs of health professionals, families, and communities.


Maternal and Child Health Library Knowledge Paths
A selection of current, high-quality resources and information tools on maternal and child health topics, including Obesity in Children and Adolescents, and Physical Activity in Children and Adolescents. Knowledge paths are aimed at health professionals, program administrators, educators, researchers, and parents.


MEDLINEplus: Exercise for Children
A compendium of information including overviews, research, tips for parents, newsletters, and statistics.


National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE)
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education has published many guides including "Active Start, A Statement of Physical Activity Guidelines for Children Birth to Five Years"; "Physical Activity for Children, A Statement of Guidelines for Children Ages 5-12, 2nd edition"; and "Kids in Action," which is an early childhood parent brochure that includes simple ideas for physical activities that can be done with children from birth to age five.
