Who We Are
The Maternal & Child Health Section seeks to improve the health of pregnant women and infants along a continuum of optimal development from birth to adolescence. Program staff from various disciplines work with parents and families to assess the major health needs of these populations. We work together to assure progress towards Oregon's Benchmarks and a healthy community.

Why We're Here
We assess, monitor, and support the health of Oregon's pregnant women, infants, and children. We promote statewide policy development, strategies, and programs that focus on prevention and risk reduction. Program efforts include high risk infant monitoring through "Babies First" Program, nutrition consultation, newborn hearing screening, and child care technical assistance. As part of the Office of Family Health, we coordinate and administer the Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and other federal and state funds to local communities.

What We're Doing
  • Supporting local health departments to plan, manage, and deliver perinatal and child health services including outreach, advocacy, systems development, nurse home visiting, and community-based health education.

  • Coordinating public health nurse home visits to pregnant women and parenting families to prevent physical, developmental, and emotional problems among high-risk infants and their families.

  • Providing statewide training and technical assistance on nutrition issues such as use of preconceptional folic acid and breastfeeding promotion.

  • Promoting public health in child care.

  • Funding the 1-800-SafeNet maternal and child health resource and referral phone line.

The Difference We're Making
We provide a wealth of resources in technical assistance, consultation, and support to improve the public health of Oregon's pregnant women, infants, and children. We distribute funds through our partnerships with local health departments for a wide variety of clinical and supportive community-based health services especially to vulnerable families. We are proud of our programs that serve so many Oregon families.
