Woodinville-Duvall Bridge reopens a week early

The first cars flowed over the repaired and upgraded Woodinville-Duvall
Bridge on Saturday afternoon (above), after crews put
the finishing touches on the the bridge rail, joints, and pavement striping
(right). The bridge had been closed since June 24 for repairs and upgrades
in several areas.
The King County Road Services Division successfully re-opened the
newly upgraded
Woodinville-Duvall Bridge on Saturday, Sept. 14th -- one week ahead of
schedule.
"The county is able to open the Duvall Bridge a week earlier than scheduled
because of the partnership with the contractor and the high levels of
commitment and coordination from the project team," said
Road Services Manager Linda
Dougherty. "The team and the contractor had a clear understanding and a mutual
interest in opening the bridge on schedule to reduce public inconvenience."
The contractor installed steel rods in the superstructure of the bridge,
resurfaced and sealed the deck, and upgraded the guardrails. It was a $2.5
million project.
During the project, the contractor started staging early in preparation for
the work after the closure. The county held weekly progress meetings at the job
site to review the schedule and immediately identify any issues needing to be
resolved. Plus, the contractor worked extra hours or added more crews as
necessary to stay on schedule.
"I am so pleased that the bridge is opening before originally scheduled,"
said Metropolitan King County Councilmember Kathy Lambert,
who represents the area. "The Roads Services Division has done a wonderful job.
The completion of this project enhances the safety for citizens that use the
bridge, and I thank the community for their patience during the construction
process."
The Roads Services Division plans more work in 2004, when additional seismic
retrofitting will be done on the bridge. The seismic retrofit should be able to
be completed without full closure of the bridge.
Built in 1951, the Woodinville-Duvall Bridge is 1,182 feet long and carries
more than 17,000 vehicles daily. More than one in ten of those vehicles are
heavy trucks, which creates a lot of wear and tear on the busy span.

Airport staff joins Unity Flag commemoration
•
Staff from King County International Airport were among the 750 people who
gathered in the Museum of Flight parking lot last week for four minutes of
silence -- one for each airliner hijacked a year ago on September 11th.
They each held up color cards for a very special photograph taken from the air.

enlarged view [96 K] of the photo taken by the Museum
of Flight. "The most memorable thing for us was the many new relationships that
were made for so many people who had never connected with the Museum of Flight
or others at the Airport before -- a very nice outcome for something that was
created out of such sadness," said Craig O'Neill, Museum of Flight Marketing
Manager. By the way, Airport staff are on the right side in the second red row
from the bottom.
Classic art deco brick exposed underneath airport facade
• Also at King County Airport, work progresses on
renovation of the
Passenger Terminal building. See a new photo showing the
art deco brick underneath the
white facade of the building, and compare it to
what's there now. "We are just so very excited to see progress," says Rita
Creighton, Airport Aviation Education Program Manager. "The building will be safer,
more economical to operate, environmentally friendly, and meet the needs of the
flying public of today and tomorrow. It will also be beautiful and evoke
memories of the past."
Commuter Vans at Colman Dock
• Metro's Rideshare Operations Vanpool Program will provide commuter vans
at Colman Dock for existing Metro vanpool groups affected by the Fauntleroy and
Southworth Ferry Terminal closures, September 21 through October 14. This
allows King County vanpools to continue their vanpool commute in Kitsap County,
transfer to the state passenger-only vessels to Colman Dock, and then transfer
to their temporary vans for the remainder of their commute. Metro Vanpool
groups will have free use of these vans during the closure and free parking at
Washington State Ferry parking lots.
Metro Transit Wall of Fame
• Metro Transit annually honors the best, brightest and most innovative
of its staff members through the Transit Wall of Fame program. This year, more
than 100 employees were nominated by their peers for their contributions. In
the end, two individuals and an 18-member team were named as the 2002 winners.
The Trolley Integration Team from the Vehicle Maintenance section was commended
for successfully combining new trolley bodies with rebuilt engines to save King
County millions of dollars. Team members are: Dave Bankson, Rellie Benton, Dave
Cluett, Kermit Gipson, Don Goodwin, Gary Irby, Cary Jacobson, John Marcell,
Mike Miller, John Nesbitt, Brian Nussbaum, Arvin Vuillet, William Wallace, Zane
Ware, Art Warner, Jim Whitesel, Terry Williams, and Charles Wright.
Individually, Libby Krochalis, a management systems
analyst, was honored for her consistently excellent work in the budgeting and
financial arena. And, schedule planner Steve Masumoto was honored for his work
to make scheduling data available to a variety of internal and external users.
