Research and Clinical Fellowships in the Imaging Sciences Program

The Imaging Sciences Training Program (ISTP), at the National Institutes of Health jointly sponsored by the Radiology and Imaging Sciences (RAD) in the Clinical Center and the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is accepting applications for one to two-year fellowship positions beginning in July 2009 and July 2010. This program provides an excellent opportunity for individuals who plan a research career in imaging and biomedical sciences.

This ISTP provides opportunities in clinical, translational and basic imaging research available in the Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission Tomography, Interventional Radiology Laboratory and Molecular and Cellular Imaging. The program spans research in all aspects of clinical and basic imaging sciences. Applicants can choose to work in research areas including: neuroimaging, interventional, oncological, vascular, metabolic imaging and computer-aided diagnosis using various imaging techniques. There are bench-to-bedside research opportunities in MRI/MRS, MR microscopy, PET radiochemistry, contrast agent development, cellular and molecular imaging, high intensity focused ultrasound, and targeted drug delivery, and innovative image processing and visualization algorithms. Qualified applicants will also be able to have clinical exposure to a unique research patient population found at the NIH. Fellows in the ISTP will have access to state-of-the-art imaging and computer facilities dedicated to research found in the Clinical Center, In Vivo NMR Research Center, and various basic science laboratories. Collaboration with imaging scientists on the NIH campus will be encouraged.

Applicants should hold the MD, MD/PhD or PhD degree and should have completed training in radiology, nuclear medicine, biomedical engineering or related area of the imaging sciences. Applications from individuals currently in U.S. residency programs may also be considered for research fellowship positions. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for this full-time equivalent appointment. Salary will vary depending upon qualifications including number of years of post-residency or graduate training. NIH also provides a generous benefit package. Qualified applicants may also be eligible for the NIH Student Loan Repayment program.

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, at least three letters of reference and a preliminary statement concerning their area of research interest to:

Tenure-Track Positions in Molecular/Cellular Imaging at NIBIB

The Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering is seeking two exceptional interdisciplinary tenure-track principal investigators to lead and conduct cutting edge research in all aspects of the development of new technologies in high-resolution optical imaging that bridge the gap between molecular and cellular scales. The research will be situated on the NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland in newly renovated laboratories. Funding for these positions will provide for state-of-the-art equipment, postdoctoral fellows, students, and technical staff. The investigators will have the opportunity to set up their own laboratories, which could include facilities for cell and molecular biology as well as for building innovative instrumentation. It is anticipated that the successful candidates will take full advantage of the abundant opportunities that exist for collaboration with other imaging scientists across all the NIH institutes to apply techniques to biomedical research.

The successful candidate for each position must have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree plus a minimum of three years postdoctoral research, and should have substantial experience in cellular and molecular imaging documented by an extensive publication record of original research, as well as a strong background in physics, chemistry or engineering.

Application Process: Candidates should submit a five-page research plan, curriculum vitae, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Sheila Barrett at sbarrett@mail.nih.gov or Bldg. 13, Rm. 3N17, National Institutes of Health, 13 South Drive, Bethesda, MD 20892. Email is preferred. Applications must be received by October 15, 2008.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or nonresident aliens with or eligible to obtain a valid employment authorizing visa.
