One evening last month, Annie Williams, a transportation security officer at Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional Airport, overheard a conversation an airline representative was having with John and Vivian Ryan and two companions. Their van broke down and they had missed their flight to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Three of the four travelers were disabled and in wheelchairs. The four had been stranded for two days and had little money.
None of the local rental car agencies had a van to accommodate John, an amputee driver. After working a full shift, Williams volunteered to drive the group to Ft. Lauderdale. She drove all night hoping to make the 15-hour round trip in time for work. While unable to get to work the following day, she picked up the repaired van in Tallahassee several days later and delivered it to Ft. Lauderdale.
"This is an excellent example of the quality of personnel assigned here in Tallahassee," said Federal Security Director Rhonda Vickery.
