Press Release of Senator Johnson

Johnson Meets with Volunteers of America

Discusses Federal Funding for New Child and Family Service Center

Contact: Julianne Fisher, 202-224-1638
Saturday, August 16, 2008

Sioux Falls, SD—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson today met with leaders of Volunteers of America, Dakotas, a non-profit, human services provider. The organization is headquartered in Sioux Falls and has offices in Rapid City and Aberdeen.

The focus of the meeting was the organization’s new Child and Family Service Center in Sioux Falls, which will house residential substance abuse programs for pregnant and parenting women; a child care center for low-income families; outpatient counseling; mediation; and crisis intervention services.

Through his position on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Johnson pushed for $750,000 in the FY2009 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill for the Center.  The bill awaits action by the Senate.  Volunteers of America, Dakotas hopes to break ground on the new facility next spring.

“As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I am working to secure funding to help Volunteers of America continue to serve South Dakotans in need,” Johnson said during the meeting. “The new Service Center will allow Volunteers of America, Dakotas to expand its reach, helping even more people in our state overcome challenges.”

One of the issues Volunteers of America, Dakotas focuses on in their counseling and crisis intervention work is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Johnson has been a leader in his work to help prevent FASD, introducing the Advancing FASD Research, Prevention, and Services Act last October. The bill would direct federal resources to FASD prevention activities and to services for individuals living with FASD and their families.
