Tunnel to close
– On September 24th of this year, 2005, the Downtown Seattle
Transit Tunnel will close for up to two years so it can be retrofitted and
upgraded for use by both buses and light rail trains. That means there’s
going to be some changes downtown to accommodate the bus traffic that is
moving from underground, up to surface streets while the tunnel is closed.
|
Planning for the
closure
– King County Metro Transit General Manager Kevin Desmond talks about the
work that has gone into planning for the tunnel closure and gives details of the
big picture about what Metro and Sound Transit are trying to accomplish.

Taking it to the streets
– So where will the buses go when the downtown transit tunnel closes?
There are currently 21 bus routes from Federal way to the Snohomish County line
that use the downtown tunnel. Metro Transportation Engineer Liz Krenzel briefs
us on the new surface street corridors that will accommodate these buses. |
Under construction –
There are some physical changes that have to be made in the tunnel to
accommodate the light rail trains, plus all the systems in the tunnel are at
least 15 years old. With the changes in technology and materials we’ve seen
in the last 15 years, and since the tunnel is going to be closed anyway,
this is the ideal time to upgrade the tunnel systems. |
