About BJA

BJA's Director, Domingo S. Herraiz

Domingo S. Herraiz was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) on March 8, 2004, and President George W. Bush signed his commission the following day. BJA supports law enforcement, courts, corrections, treatment, victim services, technology, and prevention initiatives that strengthen the nation’s criminal justice system. With its three offices—Programs, Policy, and Planning—Director Herraiz promotes his “One BJA” vision for consistent and effective services by providing hands-on leadership to BJA staff as they administer comprehensive programs and design sound and strategic policies. Director Herraiz has established the following core priorities for BJA: emphasize local control; develop collaborations and partnerships in the field; promote capacity building through planning; maximize the administration of funding and resources; increase training and technical assistance; create accountability of projects; encourage innovation; and communicate the value of justice efforts to decision makers at every level.

Before his appointment, Mr. Herraiz served on the Governor’s Cabinet as the Director of the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS). Prior to OCJS, Mr. Herraiz was the Executive Director of the Ohio Crime Prevention Association, the largest state crime prevention association in the country, and also served as the Executive Committee Chair of the Crime Prevention Coalition of America. His ability to design and articulate comprehensive strategies that reduce and prevent crime has earned him an exceptional reputation throughout the nation.
