USAID Participates in Eighth Annual Infopoverty World Conference

NEW YORK, NY- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) participated this week in the Eighth Annual Infopoverty World Conference, "Low Cost-Smart Technologies to Fight Poverty and Save the Planet," at the UN Headquarters in New York City. Members of the European Commission, UNESCO, and many others participated by videoconference. The event was held to advance the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, focusing on the alleviation of poverty through information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Terri Hasdorff, Director of USAID's Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, spoke on the role that faith and community-based organizations play in ICT establishment, including the importance of their existing network of relationships and their established trust and support from local communities.
Steven Gale, the Agency's Principal Advisor for Strategic Communications, highlighted the Global Development Commons (GDC), a USAID- initiated virtual space uniting those with a stake in global development to gather and exchange ideas and services, to increase communication, and to form strategic partnerships. The GDC will accelerate the alleviation of poverty by allowing citizens of developing countries to find solutions and resources that match their development needs.
