Objective
To provide the student with foundation for speaking and understanding the Hindi language and culture, through studies of grammar, reading and writing.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to conduct simple conversations in Hindi dealing with everyday situations, and to read and write the Hindi script.
Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include the Hindi script and sound system; personal pronouns; the verb 'to be;' nouns and gender; Type 1 and Type 2 nouns; adjectives; interrogative words; agreement of adjectives with mixed genders; simple postpositions; nouns with postpositions; and adjectives and pronouns in the oblique case.
Vocabulary topics will include various aspects of Hindi culture, including rooms in the home; meeting and greeting; talking about oneself; school; family and personal items.
Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, case studies, role playing, problem solving, oral participation/proficiency, quizzes, and mid-term and final examinations.
