ArticleGlobal Handwashing Day is October 15, 2008

The practice of hand washing with soap, the single most cost-effective way to reduce diarrhea, will be demonstrated in schools throughout the world at the same time on the first-ever Global Handwashing Day on October 15,2008. Although people around the world wash their hands with water, very few wash their hands with soap at the critical times (before eating, cooking, and after defecation). This years' focus will be on hand washing in schools, with a global challenge to mobilize school children throughout the world to simultaneously wash their hands with soap at a predetermined time to raise awareness of this important habit. More than 60 countries on five continents are expected to participate in this event. Everyone is invited to get involved! For more information, visit http://www.globalhandwashingday.org

In August two HIP staffers delivered presentations at Stockholm’s World Water Week on HIP’s Learning by Doing experience in Ethiopia and Trials of Improved Practices research in Madagascar, which generated considerable substantive debate among participants. In Analamanga, Madagascar, HIP and the regional WASH Committee participated in the WaterAid program of “camera en ballade,” a kind of candid camera program to document defecation practices throughout Madagascar and show the film to authorities as a challenge to action. Also this month, the behavior change specialist in Mali made presentations on the importance of providing appropriate access to water and sanitation facilities to vulnerable populations, including handicapped individuals, to different West Africa Water Initiative partners.

FileOpportunities for Sanitation Marketing in Uganda

In October 2007, a team of consultants from the Hygiene Improvement Project visited Uganda to determine if sanitation marketing would be a viable approach in Uganda, and to make specific recommendations to HIP and the donor community that would move the sanitation marketing agenda forward. This report presents the key findings and recommendations stemming from the trip.
The overarching conclusion is that sanitation marketing is both a viable and needed approach to increase sanitation uptake among rural households in Uganda. The team based its assessment on an analysis of the policy environment, formative research, and local-level conditions concerning Uganda’s rural household sanitation sector.
