Housing for Persons with Mental Illness

Stable housing is an essential element for anyone living with mental illness. A 2005 state survey of community mental health programs found that nearly 5,270 people with mental illness live in supportive, structured or specialized residential settings, thanks in part to a reported 92 housing projects initiated over the past five years with a capacity for 846 residents. But the survey also found that more than 12,861 additional people were in immediate need of affordable housing, that over 2,500 need supportive or structured housing, and that an estimated 3,000 adults with mental illness were homeless at the time of the survey.
