The Program Announcement “NIH National Research Service Award 
Institutional Research Training Grants,” PA00-103, was published in the 
NIH Guide on June 1, 2000, and is located at

It seeks to encourage eligible institutions to develop or enhance 
research training opportunities for individuals, selected by the 
institution, who are training for careers in specified areas of 
biomedical and behavioral research.  The National Institute of Nursing 
Research (NINR) views the T32 as one way to ensure that nurse 
scientists, highly trained in nursing research, are available in 
adequate numbers to address important gaps in our biological and 
behavioral understanding of clinical problems.  
 
In addition to the diverse scientific areas that may be the focus of 
the institutional training grant, this NOTICE seeks to encourage T32 
applicants to consider two particular areas of inquiry for the May 10, 
2001 receipt date: 1) genetics and 2) health disparities of underserved 
populations. These research areas continue to be identified by NINR and 
the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research (NACNR) as needing 
increased attention at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels.  The

NINR is also interested in applications in any scientific area of 
inquiry that provide creative research training experiences for recent 
nursing graduates or students in BSN to PhD programs. A 2000 report by 
the National Research Council recommended: “The NINR should emphasize 
research training programs that foster earlier entry into research 
careers. . . . The NINR may wish to consider redirecting a portion of 
its NRSA funds to programs targeting students entering the nursing 
profession (such as B.A.-to-Ph.D. Programs) and recent nursing

by a recent nursing research training workshop and by the National

Please note that T32 applications for the National Institute of Nursing 
Research are accepted annually for the receipt date of May 10.
