NPS Hosts Homeland Security Conference as Gustav Hurls Towards Gulf

Cell phones rang and beepers beeped as top Department of Homeland Security and other crisis/disaster management officials, first responders and industry and academic leaders gathered at the Naval Postgraduate School Aug. 26-29 for the second annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) conference on “Homeland Security in Action” occurring just as hurricane Gustav bore down on the Louisiana coast. The goal of the working symposium was to catalyze communications, collaboration and interoperability among the agencies, organizations and individuals who develop and operate air, space and maritime systems in support of the homeland defense and security mission. A highlight of the conference was the presentation of a special commendation award to the Department of Homeland Security by AIAA Homeland Security Program Committee chair Dr. Kevin Kremeyer, left. Accepting the honor on behalf of Secretary Michael Chertoff was Assistant Secretary for Policy Stewart Baker, right, who spoke at the first day’s luncheon. U.S. Navy photo by Javier Chagoya.
