Breaking Into the Trade Game: A Primer on How to Develop and Grow International Markets

From session to session, we will follow up and help you complete your "Export Plan". All executives who successfully complete this training course will receive a certificate of export training from the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Duquesne University SBDC. In addition, your company will be ready to benefit from the following to help you get your "Export Plan" ready to go:

Session 1: Making the Export Decision

  • September 23rd, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Identify if your product/service has export potential
  • Research export statistics, your competition in the global marketplace, and resources available to penetrate your chosen market
  • Includes an international marketing workbook to assess your company's export readiness, business goals, and commitment
  • Meet an actual small business exporter- learn from those active in exporting product/services that have made mistakes

Session 2: Making the Connection- Selecting the Best Markets

  • September 30th, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Identify methods of export, how to locate agents, distributors, and develop joint ventures
  • Learn how to market your product- from pricing to promotional strategies
  • Explore how you can improve your bottom-line quickly in a slow economy
  • Meet an exporter that learned how to make successful connections

Session 3: Transporting Goods Internationally

  • October 7th, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Focuses on moving good overseas, including packaging and labeling
  • Have you identified the proper freight forwarder?
  • Introduces basic export rules and takes you through a step-by-step process of filling out certificates of origin, bills and lading, and other important documents of export
  • Learn about incoterms, documentation, customs brokers, and the services provided by freight forwarders

Session 4: Legal Issues for Exporters

  • October 14th, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Export licensing and controls, agent and distributor agreements, international contract, various types of insurance, and what you need to know about end use of your product to stay out of trouble
  • Hear from firms that have real life stories to tell about how the war on terrorism has changed their way of doing business

Session 5: Letters of Credit, Financing, and Payment Methods

  • October 21st, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Gain knowledge about the financial services of the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Export Import (EXIM) Bank
  • See how the State Government programs will help when commercial banks are unable to assist your firm
  • Learn how to move your goods overseas and understand crucial export documentations, such as letters of Credit, documentary collection, and proper use of open account terms
  • Meet an exporter that uses all types of collection methods and see how important documents are to assuting that you get paid

Session 6: International Video Conference

  • October 28th, 2008
  • 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Discuss your product/service with representatives of the State of Pennsylvania Overseas Offices or the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service at U.S. Embassies worldwide via video conference to discuss in detail your true export potential. Our major trading partners will be online
  • Distributor from a select country describes market details to obtain your business, upcoming trade shows, and trade missions to your country of interest and real stories to access the markets
