Brief Description: On February 24, 2004, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Al Hoceima Province in northern Morocco, with aftershocks continuing through March 3. The epicenter of the quake was located in the Strait of Gibraltar, 298 km east-northeast of Rabat. The closest affected city was Al Hoceima - population 100,000. According to official figures from the Government of Morocco, the earthquake killed 640 people, injured 547 others, and left more than 15,000 homeless. In addition, nearly the entire population living in the affected areas chose to live and sleep outdoors in the days following the quake fearing the collapse of damaged buildings during aftershocks.
