The Department of the Interior recognizes that the orientation of wildland fire education at the public and employee levels has been focused on suppression and fire prevention. There is an increasing need for public, federal wildland agency employees, media and special interest groups to have a broader fundamental knowledge of the role of fire in ecosystems.
To meet that need, the Fire Education Task Force was chartered to oversee the development of a strategic plan and the execution of a broad-reaching, nationwide education program.
The task force includes representatives from the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the USDA Forest Service.
These agencies are dedicated to teaching their employees and the public about the role of wildland fire and its use in resource management practices.
The Fire Ecology package, one element of this initiative, has been developed to help school children better understand the broad spectrum of the role of wildland fire.
