Introduction to Federal EEO (CD-ROM based)

Overview:
Prevent actions of illegal discrimination that could cost your agency thousands of dollars in lost productivity, administrative costs, and legal fees. Avoid actions that could put yourself and your agency in legal jeopardy and potentially lead to costly and embarrassing discrimination charges. Equivalent to 12 classroom hours. This course is also part of the Human Resources Management Certificate, Level 1, program that can be completed entirely through distance education.

In this independent study CD course, assistance is available as needed. Take up to six months to complete.

First-line supervisors as well as anyone who is accountable for or helps with the prevention and remedy of unlawful employment discrimination.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In an innovative multimedia CD-ROM format, you can explore the topic of EEO on your desktop PC at your own pace. The course is an engaging, supportive, and risk-free environment, in which you will learn through realistic video scenarios of real-life work situations and practice exercises.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Chapter 1: Foundation for the Federal EEO Program

  • Lesson 1 EEO: Definition, Origin, and Oversight
    • When you complete this lesson you will be able to:
      • Define Equal Employment Opportunity
      • Identify the three types of law which serve as the origin of Federal EEO
      • List five key Federal EEO statutes and describe their importance
      • Name the Federal agency responsible for Federal EEO guidance and oversight

  • Lesson 2: Purpose and Structure of the Federal EEO Program
    • When you complete this lesson you will be able to:
      • Define the overall purpose of the Federal EEO Program
      • List the three required components of an agency’s EEO Program and explain the purpose of each

Chapter 2: Forms of Prohibited Discrimination

  • Lesson 1: How Discrimination Can Occur
    • When you complete this lesson you will be able to:
      • Define illegal employment discrimination
      • Recognize examples of the following forms of employment discrimination and explain why they are illegal
    • Disparate treatment -- Acts of intentional discrimination
    • Disparate impact -- Practices which have the effect of discrimination
    • Non-Accommodation of Religion -- Beliefs and practices
    • Non-Accommodation of Disability -- Mental or Physical
    • Retaliation

  • Lesson 2: Avoiding Discrimination Based on Race, Color, National Origin, Religion, Sex, Age and Disability
    • When you complete this lesson you will be able to:
      • Define race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age and disability
      • Recognize examples of discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age and disability
      • Identify actions most likely to lead to complaints of discrimination
      • Correctly choose the appropriate action to take in situation with the potential for discrimination

Chapter 3: The Federal Discrimination Complaint Process

  • Lesson 1: The Federal Discrimination Complaint Process
    • When you complete this lesson you will be able to:
      • Explain the purpose of the Federal discrimination complaint process
      • Name the eight bases for discrimination complaints
      • Identify the first thing you should do if you feel you have been discriminated against
      • Describe the role of the EEO Counselor
      • List five employee rights with regard to the complaint process
      • Describe five important EEO responsibilities of managers and supervisors
