Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a condition in which build-up of plaque on the artery walls of your limbs negatively affects blood flow. Those afflicted with PAD are more prone to foot problems, which can quickly lead to amputation without proper care. In fact, those with diabetes are at a much higher risk for having PAD – and together, they are the two leading causes of non-traumatic, lower limb amputations. During September’s National PAD Awareness Month, the American Podiatric Medical Association has partnered with the PAD Coalition to educate the general public on what PAD is, its chief causes and ways to manage and prevent the condition.
