Accepting Nominations for 2009 AACE & ACE Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for 2009 AACE and ACE Awards to be presented at the 18th Annual Meeting & Clinical Congress in Houston.  All AACE members can submit nominations for these awards.  Please review the awards descriptions and download the nomination form.

Nominations are due by close of business on September 30, 2008.

AACE Awards
AACE Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award; Eugene T. Davidson, MD, Award for Public Service; H. Jack Baskin, MD, Endocrine Teaching Award; and Outstanding Service Award for the Promotion of Endocrine Health of an Underserved Population.

ACE Awards
Master of the American College of Endocrinology (MACE); Distinction in Clinical Endocrinology Award; Yank D. Coble, Jr., MD, Distinguished Service Award; and International Clinician Award.

A study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Rome Italy and concurrently published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) showed that after six months of using Continuous Glucose Monitoring devices, adults above the age of 24 with type 1 diabetes had significantly better blood sugar control, as reflected by a drop in A1c levels of approximately 0.5%--without an increase in the incidence of hypoglycemia.

A new report in JAMA shows four additional deaths related to Byetta. At this time, it is unclear if the deaths were related to pancreatitis. In the previous FDA report on exenatide in 2007, none of the cases of pancreatitis led to death, although there were serious complications in several cases. What we do not know is what the true incidence is of pancreatitis in patients who are placed on exenatide. Is pancreatitis on exenatide a rare phenomenon, or is it far more common than presently reported? Diabetes Experts Respond to Report Showing One in Twelve Americans have Diabetes
The CDC today reported that the number of Americans with diabetes has grown to more than 24 million. AACE has issued a press release about the efforts of this association and its members to help stop the epidemic of diabetes through prevention, early detection, and management of the disease. AACE Encourages Diabetes Patients to Prepare for Disasters with New Checklist
AACE has developed a checklist to help prevent the interruption of treatment to diabetes patients in a time of disaster. This checklist is a great way for patients to prepare themselves before disaster strikes. These recommendations are not limited to hurricanes. The content is applicable for a variety of disasters including tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires and man-made disasters. We encourage you to take a moment to share them with your patients.
