Bull kelp (Nereocystis leutkeana) forms a critical habitat in Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. Its hollow stems grow quickly, afixed to rocks on the bottom. At the surface, broad blades spread across the water. Kelp beds are important habitat for sea otters and a host of other species. (photo: Steve Fisher)
