Aircraft Observations Available through AWIPS

Three PACJET aircraft products are available through AWIPS. These are all text products, graphical products are under development.

PIL Product description
MIAREPNT2 MinObs: 30 second flight data.
MIAREPPN3 Dropsonde data.
MIAREPPN0 Reconnaissance messages.

If you've done the AWIPS installation described in the PACJET Alert ADMMSG of 1250 PST 7 February 2001, you can now view PACJET flight data on your text workstation. As there indicated, these data can be retrieved by typing in the PIL: MIAREPNT2

What you'll then get is a text product that looks like the following (Note: see the PACJET home page for latest info on when the aircraft will be flying).

These are aircraft flight level meteorological data taken at 30-sec intervals. The data are transmitted collectively every 10 minutes. Here's a basic guide to decoding these reports:

Col. 1: HHMMSS   The time of the observation in hours, minutes and
                 seconds (UTC).  All averages (except peak wind) are
                 centered around this time.

Col. 2: LLmm     The latitude of the observation in degrees and minutes. 

Col. 3: LLLmm    The longitude of the observation in degrees and
                 minutes.

Col. 4: PPPPP    The pressure altitude in feet.

Col. 5: +/-DDDD  The D-value (Geopotential Altitude - Pressure Altitude)
                 in feet.  There will always be a leading sign (+ or -)
                 followed by 4 numeric characters (leading zeros if 
                 required).

Col. 6: WWWSSS   WWW: The wind direction in degrees, with 0 being true
                 North, increasing clockwise.
                 SSS: The wind speed in knots.

Col. 7: +/-TTT   The air temperature in degrees and tenths Celsius.

Col. 8: +/-ddd   The dew point temperature, encoded the same way as air
                 temperature.

Col. 9: wwwsss   www: The direction of the peak wind during this
                 interval (30 sec, 1 min, etc.).  The peak wind is
                 defined as the maximum 10-sec average wind.
                 sss: The speed of the peak wind in knots.


Cols. 10 and 11:  Not used here -- each will show up as 999.

As an example, here's the first line of the above report and the decoded information contained therein:

Peak wind during past 30 seconds: 234 deg at 26 kts

If dropsondes are deployed, data will be transmitted on AWIPS with the PIL MIAREPPN3 and recon messages (text description of something interesting observed from the plane) with the PIL MIAREPPN0. To decode the former (and for further info on the flight level data), see Appendix G to the National Hurricane Operation Plan, which is available on-line as a PDF document at:

How to read the Obs | How to install the Obs

1) on as2 edit /data/fxa/nationalData/ispan_table.template to add the following lines:

URNT40KWBC  MIAREPNT2     (this file is in alphabetical order)
URPN10KWBC  MIAREPPN0     (that's a zero at the end)
UZPN13KWBC  MIAREPPN3

2) cd /awips/fxa/data/localization/scripts

3) ./mainScript.csh -text

4) stop StdDBDecoder (ps -ef | grep Std and then kill, it will restart on its own)

The MinObs product will then store in MIAREPNT2, reco messages in MIAREPPN0, and dropsondes in MIAREPPN3.
