Wind Energy Center at the Minnesota State Fair

Windustry is proud to once again host the Wind Energy Center at the 2008 Minnesota State Fair. Visitors will have the chance to learn about wind energy, talk to a wind expert, try one of our fun activities, and look at the 123-foot blade.

Just as in the past two years, Windustry will make wind energy the star of the fair's Eco Experience with a 123-foot turbine blade in front of the building and a Wind Energy Center inside.

The Wind Energy Center features a large turbine tower section, as well as:

  • Small home and farm scale wind turbines,
  • The History of Wind
  • A computer model displaying wind patterns over the Midwest,
  • Myths and Facts game
  • Renewable Energy Activity Corral
  • Policy Puzzle, and
  • Much More!

New for 2008

  • New activities in the Renewable Energy Activity Corral and more activity sessions each day.
  • Video tour of a wind turbine.
  • Work in Wind area with dress-up activity.
  • Envision Wind magnetic landscape.

The Wind Energy Center is completely interactive and visitors learn about wind energy in Minnesota through hands-on activities, games, demonstrations, and computer simulations.

Over 350,000 visitors came through the fair's Eco Experience in 2007.

National Association of State Energy Officials Annual Meeting

Renewable Energy in New England

This conference brings together federal and state policy makers, developers, transmission companies and financial players to discuss opportunities and challenges for renewable energy and efficiency programs in the Northeast. These high level speakers will address the current status and likely impacts of federal and state initiatives, the next wave of renewable technologies to be deployed in the region and opportunities for increased investment in the sector.

While the conference will provide an excellent overview of the pertinent law, policy and economics, the goal is to create an opportunity for a focused faculty and audience to develop new insights and relationships that will increase opportunities for continued success in the renewable sector.

Net Metering Technical/Procedural Conference

The purpose of the technical conference is to discuss the changes to Utah Code 54-15 — Net Metering of Electricity enacted by the 2008 Senate Bill 84 — Net Metering Programs, to identify other remaining barriers to net metering not addressed in the legislation, and to determine a process or processes for evaluation of issues identified by parties which may result in the modification of utility tariffs.

During the Summer of 2008, a series of three events will be held to enable interested persons to learn about Missouri's wind energy resources, meet others with similar interests, and consider what needs to happen to assure the state's wind energy potential best serves the needs of Missourians.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Energy Center plans to use video conferencing to share presentations and panel discussion among three panels as a means to expand understanding of the state's wind energy potential, and explore the challenges involved in developing this native renewable energy resource.

The wind energy forums will address utility scale wind development issues, including:

  • Opportunities for, and barriers to, wind resource development
  • Utility operations and transmission needs
  • Landowner concerns
  • Economic development potential
  • Environmental, wildlife and aesthetic considerations
  • Discussion of how to best use the state's wind energy potential.

Residential Wind Installation

Wind Power for the Landowner: A Workshop Providing Technical Assistance to Residents of Rural Oregon

Paul Gipe will present a two-hour seminar on renewable energy policy options for Michigan at the Kellogg Center from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Room. One of the topics of his seminar will be "feed-in tariffs" to promote expansion of renewable energy such as those used in Europe and Ontario, Canada. Representative Kathleen Law has introduced similar legislation for Michigan.

Gipe, the author of several popular books on wind energy, was recently given the World Wind Energy Award at the World Wind Energy Association's annual conference. Previously Gipe had been named a pioneer in wind energy by the World Renewable Energy Council in 1998 and the wind industry's person of the year by the American Wind Energy Association in 1988.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the Michigan State University Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics and the Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service. The event is free and open to the public.

California Wind Energy Collaborative Forum 2008

The call will cover the recent competitive renewable energy zones (CREZ) order from the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) and a transmission proposal now under development by the Southwest Power Pool's Regional State Committee.

In August, the Texas PUC issued an order approving a nearly $5 billion plan to construct 2,400 miles of transmission lines that will accommodate over 18 GW of wind capacity, just 1,000 MW shy of the current installed wind capacity in the United States. Jess Totten of the Texas PUC will be on hand to talk about the order and to discuss next steps in the Texas CREZ process.
