The U.S. DOE issued the "20% Wind Energy by 2030" report in May 2008. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is pleased to present this Webcast to members of the Michigan Wind Working Group to provide insights on the report and to present AWEA policy initiatives on behalf of the wind industry. The presentation will help support and guide various state-level efforts in the state of Michgan that the Michigan Wind Working Group has already underway or may initiate in the future. Physical Location
The Michigan Renewable Energy Program and the Michigan Wind Working Group will host this Webcast in the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) offices in Lansing, in Hearing Room A. We reserved MPSC Hearing Room A from 9 a.m. until noon, so that anyone interested can continue the discussion here until noon, and then anyone interested can make their own arrangements for lunch at any nearby restaurant. Please plan to arrive a few minutes before the 9:30 a.m. starting time, so that you leave ample time to come into the building, obtain a visitor pass, and find your way to the hearing room prior to the start of the call.
Any interested person may attend and participate. The meeting site is accessible, including handicapped parking. During this Webcast Stacy Tellinghuisen of Western Resource Advocates presented on the topic "The Energy/Water Nexus: A case study of the Arkansas River Basin." Water is essential to sustain agriculture, municipalities, industrial operations, and many forms of electricity generation. As cities and electricity needs grow, finite water resources will become more stressed; increased ethanol production and climate change may exacerbate these stresses. Using the Arkansas River Basin in Colorado and western Kansas as a case study, Stacy examined future water demands under "business as usual" and several alternative development scenarios. The project abstract is attached (PDF 60 KB).
Western Resource Advocates recently completed a similar analysis on future water demands in the State of Nevada. That report, along with the report on the Arkansas River Basin, will be published soon and will be available on the Western Resource Advocates Web site. Regional Renewable Energy Development Workshop: Southwest Tribes Date: 7/21/2008 to 7/24/2008Location: Albuquerque , NMThis workshop focuses on the renewable energy development opportunities available to tribes in a specific region. This interactive course is designed to explore strategic energy planning and energy options to meet the long term energy goals of your Tribe. The workshop is focused on: 1) renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency concepts; 2) renewable energy project development; 3) organization and legal framework for development; and 4) financing options leading toward sustainable tribal communities. Annual Report on U.S. Wind Power Installation, Cost, and Performance Trends: 2007: Webcast Date: 7/9/2008Location: COPhone: (303) 384-6962 Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory gave a Webcast on July 9, 2008. The presentation lasted approximately 30 minutes and was followed by a half hour available for questions and answers.
During this Webcast Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory summarized key findings from the U.S. Department of Energy's recently released "Annual Report on U.S. Wind Power Installation, Cost, and Performance Trends: 2007 (PDF 4.0 MB) Download Adobe Reader." In following the contents of the report itself, the presentation provided a comprehensive overview of trends in the U.S. wind power market, with a particular focus on 2007. Drawing from a variety of sources, the presentation summarized the latest information on a variety of topics, including: wind project installation trends; wind industry developments; evolution of wind power sales prices; comparing the price of wind with wholesale market prices; installed wind project costs; wind turbine prices; wind project performance; O&M cost trends; and integration, transmission, and policy developments. Of particular note, the presentation highlighted data on project-level wind power pricing, installed project costs, and wind project performance that have not previously been summarized in as comprehensive a fashion as in the DOE report. The purpose of the Symposium is to inform stakeholders and other interested parties about the progress that wind power has made in the region over the last few years. The Symposium will address critical and timely issues pertaining to wind power development in Virginia and throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

The topic of this Webcast is "Wind Farming" and was presented by David Kolsrud. David Kolsrud has over 13 years of experience in renewable energy and is well recognized nationwide. He has helped to develop, organize, and fund over 20 renewable energy projects — primarily ethanol, biodiesel, and wind projects. In 2006, he formed DAK Renewable Energy, which manages 11 LLCs with investments in multiple renewable projects. David's thesis has been that community ownership of biofuels plants has had a significant positive benefit which can be repeated or enhanced using wind energy. A major goal of the workshop is to increase the visibility of engineering career opportunities in the wind industry, with an emphasis on power engineering. Toward this end, the workshop discussions will highlight growing needs for power engineering professionals knowledgeable in all aspects of wind energy. The workshop will also address sources of support for university research and education programs capable of expanding the numbers of qualified engineering graduates and launching them onto rewarding career paths in the wind and electric power communities. New Great Lakes Wind Collaborative to Hold 1st Annual Meeting Date: 5/6/2008 to 5/7/2008Location: Buffalo , NYHyatt Regency Hotel. The Great Lakes Wind Collaborative (GLWC) will hold its 1st Annual Meeting May 6-7, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Buffalo, New York. The meeting will provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to learn more about this new collaborative and become engaged in wind issues on a regional level. Presentations on the role of wind energy in meeting the Great Lakes region's energy needs of the 21st century as well as the Midwestern Governors Association's Energy Security and Climate Change Platform and its implications for wind energy in the Great Lakes region will be part of the program. Topical presentations and discussions on issues surrounding off shore wind development and environmental and wildlife impacts of wind power are also part of the two-day event. The newly-formed GLWC will unveil a first year workplan. Participants will be invited to provide feedback on the first year activities.
Breakout sessions will further provide participants with an opportunity to help shape future activities of the Great Lakes Wind Collaborative. Specific topical areas to be discussed include environmental planning, siting and permitting, research gaps, off shore aspects, transmission and power system integration, and economic development aspects of wind power. Interested stakeholders can go to the Web site to sign up for periodic updates on GLWC activities. A draft agenda and registration information for the meeting will be available on the GLWC Web site in the near future.
The GLWC is a group established to build consensus and identify and address issues affecting the planning, development, and operation of wind power facilities in the Great Lakes region. The GLWC provides a forum for dialogue and an opportunity for analysis and exchange of information among key stakeholders to facilitate sustainable wind power development in the region.
The Great Lakes Commission serves as the Secretariat for the GLWC, with funding in part from the U.S. Department of Energy - National Renewal Energy Laboratory. Date: 4/23/2008 to 4/25/2008Location: Girdwood , AKWe welcome you to attend the 2008 International Wind Diesel Workshop being hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Alaska Energy Authority, and the Renewable Energy Alaska Project. It has been almost four years since the last wind-diesel workshop and the technology has expanded in nature and application. New systems have been installed from Alaska to the Galapagos Islands and several older sites have seen large expansions. The rising cost of diesel fuel and the maturing of the wind industry is continuing to spur the market forward, with projects being planned or implemented from Mongolia to Antarctica. As with all of the workshops in pervious years, this one will focus on what has worked, and what has not, bringing the wind-diesel community together to share and discuss the current status of the technology and where we feel it should be going.
